Writing Tips from Bestseller Fiction Authors

Writing Tips from Bestseller Fiction Authors If you want to accomplish a goal, there is no better way to prepare than to follow the advice of someone who has already reached that exact goal. The same is true for publishing bestselling fiction novels. Although each author has their own process for getting there, here are some indispensable tips from bestselling fiction authors to help you get there faster.Read everything you can lay hands on. I always advise people who want to write a fantasy or science fiction or romance to stop reading everything in those genres and start reading everything else from Bunyan to Byatt.Michael MoorcockThis one is a common tip from multiple authors. You cant be a good writer without first having read whats out there. This applies to books that are in the same genre youre writing, as well as other books that are considered classics in the literary world (theres a reason they became classics). Reading within your own genre insures that you have a good understanding of whats already been published an d what publishers have accepted in the past. Youll also know what readers within that genre likeâ€"the types of characters, plots, etc.Protect the time and space in which you write. Keep everybody away from it, even the people who are most important to you.Zadie SmithThe writing life is essentially one of solitary confinement â€" if you cant deal with this you neednt apply. Will SelfThis concept is especially difficult for many authors, particularly those who have family responsibilities and who write from home. Theres really no good way to deal with it, and lets face itâ€"reading over the biographies of famous authors of the past, you can find many examples of failed marriages and ruined relationships. However, if you dont protect the time and space in which you write, youll likely never get anything written. Interruptions to your creative process can set you back each time they happen, until you lose the moment completely and nothing gets done. This includes online and social media interruptions, by the way, which leads us to the next tip.Its doubtful that anyone with an internet connection at his workplace is writing good fiction.Jonathan FranzenWork on a computer that is disconnected from the internet.Zadie SmithBe honestâ€"how often do you keep social media and text notifications on while sitting at your workspace to write? If this is a habit for you (as it is with most people), end it. Beyond the inconsequential social media updates that most of us spend too much time reading, these interruptions are just as bad as offline interruptions. The concept of unplugging in this sense might not be completely true if youre still using a laptop, but at the very least, you should disconnect and unplug from the internet. That funny cat meme or picture of so-and-sos toes on the beach can wait.Always carry a note-book. And I mean always. The short-term memory only retains information for three minutes; unless it is committed to paper you can lose an idea for ever. Will S elfHow many times have you been driving your car or out running errands when an idea for your novel struck? If youre like many authors, the creative process goes beyond the time you spend sitting at your laptop or typewriterâ€"it is a constant thought (obsession, even) in your head. So carry a notebook with you to record these thoughts. Dont trust your memory enough to remember it when you get back to your desk, write it down now (or at least as soon as you pull the car over to the side of the road).Read it aloud to yourself because thats the only way to be sure the rhythms of the sentences are OK (prose rhythms are too complex and subtle to be thought outâ€"they can be got right only by ear).Diana AthillIf your character dialogue doesnt sound realistic, that will be obvious as soon as you read it aloud. When we read words aloud, we go slower and pay more attention to the rhythm of the language, which makes reading aloud a great proofing tool to determine if a section is written wel l.Dont tell me the moon is shining; show me the glint of light on broken glass.Anton ChekhovThis is Writing 101, but writers still tend to forget it. Narration that describes is not nearly as exciting as seeing it through a characters eyes, particularly in unexpected ways. It gives the character more depth, adds deeper levels of metaphor, and sounds new and different to a reader who has read about the moon shining over the lake too often already. You know that sickening feeling of inadequacy and over-exposure you feel when you look upon your own empurpled prose? Relax into the awareness that this ghastly sensation will never, ever leave you, no matter how successful and publicly lauded you become. It is intrinsic to the real business of writing and should be cherished. Will SelfFinally, lets talk about the confidence that is required to finally let someone read your precious manuscript. This part is difficult for even the most seasoned writers because really, it is a process of laying your soul bare (since your heart and soul was put into that manuscript in the first place). Just keep in mind that in releasing your writing to be read by an audience, you will inevitably feel inadequate and overly critical of yourself and your work. Swallow those feelings and give it to your reader anyway. Their reaction will almost always be better than you anticipated.

Line, Staff and Human Resources Management Authority Free Essays

Line, Staff and Human Resources Management Authority What does it take to get the right organizational design for Human Resources? In today’s constantly evolving environment, developing an organization that makes the right decisions, while directing others’ work and giving orders requires having line and staff authority in place. In this essay, we will explain what authority is and explain the difference from line authority and staff authority. Also we will explain what type of authority human resource managers have. We will write a custom essay sample on Line, Staff and Human Resources Management Authority or any similar topic only for you Order Now So what is authority? Authority is â€Å"the power to determine, adjudicate, or otherwise settle issues or disputes; jurisdiction; the right to control, command, or determine† (Dictionary. com, n. d. ). Power is the ability to get things done either to enforce one’s own will or to enforce the collective will of an organization. This tells us that all managers have some form of authority. Now, let us distinguish between line authority and staff authority. Line authority gives management individuals the formal power to direct and control immediate subordinates. Staff authority gives managers the right to advise, recommend, and counsel other managers and employees. It is a communication relationship with management. It has an influence that derives indirectly from line authority at a higher level. According to Dessler (2008), line authority creates a superior-subordinate relationship and staff authority creates an advisory relationship. The authority of human resources is delegated by the top management of organizations. How much authority it derives from top management is a policy matter. With today’s workforce becoming increasingly diverse and organizations doing more to maximize the benefits of the differences in employees, human resource managers are key players. Organizations are relying on managers to get the people who get the job done, and of course, make the company money. Human resource managers have three fundamental functions: 1) line function – directing activities within the department and related areas while having implied authority, 2) coordinative function – coordinating personnel activities and 3) staff functions – assisting and advising line managers. In conclusion, line, staff and human resources personnel must work together closely to maintain the efficiency and effectiveness of the organization. To ensure that line, staff and human resources personnel do work together productively, management must make sure all groups understand the organizational mission, have specific objectives, and realize that they are partners in helping the organization reach its objectives. Ans) Catholic Church organization comprises of: It is the same structure that was in place ago but the main difference John Paul’s leadership has brought is the replacement of most Italian Clergy in Curia. It has given the administration new ideas and a complete turnover. Q3) Are there other ways to structure an organization of the size of the Catholic Church?Ans) Restructuring this huge type of organization is almost impossible. Its very difficult to alter that wider span of control or to centralize it. The only way to improve this structure (In my view) is to appoint teams working independently just to have a check and balance on the performance of the clergy without involving in their duties. Q4) What has John Paul done to improve the church’s effectiveness? Ans) Showing his excellent leadership qualities, Pope John Paul has invested a great amount of time travelling around the Globe and making his subordinates aware of their respective duties they had to perform.Using Goals Approach, he has clearly outlined each person in the organization the work they had to do and has given them a sense of purpose. By involving in their work, improving coordination amongst the members and taking their inputs, he has certainly improved his organizations effectiveness. Q5) Compare and contrast the pope’s role in the Catholic Church with the job of corporate CEO, such as Lee Lacocca at Chrysler corporation. Ans) The Commonality between both the CEOs is their devotion to their work, the way they understand their organization goals and the way they want those to be achieved. Both renowned for bringing a turnaround in their respective organizations when it was needed the most. But the main contrast in both the characters is that one is a CEO of a profit organization and the other being the head of a religious nonprofit organization. Both are pursuing different ultimate goals. One seeks to achieve the goal of profit maximization while the other seeks the maximum satisfaction of his followers and the strict implication of his religion. Both follow the same strategy but their domain is totally different.
